I have always been a writer.
When I was a kid I would scribble stories on lined notebook paper and refer to them as “my books.” I would dictate tales of intrigue, mystery, and bizarre science into my cassette recorder (my favorite Christmas present of all time). In school, my writing assignments always became an avenue for my story telling, sometimes to the detriment of my grades (“This was supposed to be a story about a true event in your life, not a fictional account of the time you met Bigfoot!”).
In high school, my writing came to the attention of a line of wonderful English teachers, who were kind of enough to encourage me and place me in honors classes. I was tapped to be on the school newspaper, where I thrived. And in Speech, I discovered an aspect of my writing talent that I would later rely upon constantly. Having forgotten to write a speech for a major assignment (and a contest entry), I jotted something down while the first speaker was going. I was the second presenter, and I read what I'd just written only ten minutes prior into the tape recorder. Three months later I was handed a check for $500 for my impromptu piece of writing. My ability to think fast and write quickly and well had just made me my first substantial income.
Over the years, through college and into the workforce, writing would become the springboard for any and all success in my life. It won me awards, it earned me paychecks, it got me into scholarship and grant programs. Writing helped me win the hearts of women and inspire the loyalty of friends. It opened doors to any world I was interested in, from television and film to advertising and marketing, history and aviation to business and strategy. In short, I have had a career filled with learning and growth and the exploration of hundreds of fascinating topics, and it is all thanks to writing.
Today, I write for hundreds of clients, and work on hundreds of projects each year. I write for publications in print and online. I write scripts for television and film. I write blogs, post on social networking sites, and write for digital newsletters. I am connected to the world through the word, and it's amazing.
I have always been a writer. I always will be. And the writer in me, he wants to learn and create and grow, and to share that with his clients, readers, friends, and family. So far, I've done a pretty good job of that.
