the author’s note
for the book of life.

Last Page Day is my personal celebration of writing the last page of a Moleskine journal, before diving into a whole new journey the next day.
We’re a culture suffering an identity crisis. Actually, scratch that… we’re a culture suffering from identity amnesia. And what we choose to fill that void may be making the problem worse. Identity without intention is illusion. And here’s why.
I haven’t been as focused as I need to be. Because that focus came with risks. It’s time to face the risks, to be bold and put myself on a path where there’s no turning back. Time to burn the boats.
Want to get somewhere? Get a map. You can arrive somewhere without knowing where you’re going, but then you have to live with what you find when you get there. Want to be someone? Craft a persona. You can be who you say you are.
Don’t let the phrase “fake it” fool you into thinking it isn’t real. You can gain any skill, achieve any level of success, become anyone or anything you mean to be, if you start by believing it first.
The way you’ve thought and decide and acted in the past got you all the way from birth to where you are now. And if where you are now is some problem you have to face, then doing things the way you’ve always done them isn’t going to solve it. Past You has no idea how to solve Present You’s problems.
Some days you just feel sad, anxious, weary right down into your bones and in your soul. And on those days, it can feel like the only thing you’re capable of is letting it all happen to you. But you can choose. And small choices can lead to big changes.
The interesting thing about your mind is that in just about every respect it is an “environment.” And unlike your external environment, the mind is one you can intentionally shape and care for. You can design your mind.
Time travel. Ok… maybe not time travel. But the next best thing, possibly. Because we have a remarkable super power, in the form of being able to reframe and rewrite our memories and experiences. And if we are who we remember ourselves to be, then we have the power to change at will.
Why did Steve Jobs wear turtlenecks? And why do I get up at 5AM every morning—rain, shine, or freezing cold—to take a tiny dog outside to poop? It all comes down to choices. Our choices are our lives.
You can either spend your time and energy trying to be all things to all people, trying to be a success in a broad field where the competition is stiff, or you can turn all of that toward the singular goal of becoming the biggest fish in your small pond. Become too big to ignore. Become inevitable.
When I started slipping into depression, I felt like nothing excited me anymore. Nothing kept my interest. My life became bland. But then I discovered the wonder of being willfully curious.
When things go wrong—and they will go wrong—you can either react and let the problem do all your thinking, or you can keep your cool and choose a response. Responding over reacting is how you gain and prosper, even when things go wrong.
You’re going to experience pain and suffering and tragedy anyway. Why fight it? Use it instead.
Marketing doesn’t have to be all about business. We end up having to market ourselves to new friends all the time. Marketing is about connecting with people. Let’s look at putting it to work in every aspect of our lives.
The thing you’re reluctant to do is probably the best indication of what you should do next. Every time you embrace discomfort, you’re resetting the bar on your own limitations.
Gratitude is such a simple thing, but it’s way more powerful than you think. If you make the effort to both feel and express genuine gratitude, it changes everything about your life. You come from a place of abundance, you open doors that were closed, you resolve conflicts. Gratitude makes you someone new.
No doubt, time is precious. But if you don’t have the energy to use that time, then it’s worthless. That’s why it’s more important to work out how to manage and increase your energy, so that you can get the most of of all that time.
Have you ever stopped to think about the progression of amazing, incredible, seemingly impossible things that had to happen just so you could read these words on whatever device you’re using? From the creation of language and culture to the invention of the microchip, it all started with the mind.
In 2012 Neil Gaiman gave an address to the graduating class of the University of the Arts. In it he used the metaphor of a mountain to frame his career. I have misinterpreted that metaphor for years. Let’s set the record straight.
One day you’re part of a huge community, pulsing with energy. The next your trying to find a cup of coffee in a place where no one knows you, and no face is familiar. Community evolves, and so do you.
Let’s be honest—you’re not really in control of your life. In fact, there’s really only one thing you ever actually have control over. And the good news is, it’s the key to everything.
Chances are, if you’re looking around to find out what it is that’s been keeping you from moving forward, keeping you from achieving everything you meant or mean to achieve, you might find the answer faster by looking in a mirror.
Like any blade, your patience will take some wear and tear with use. You’ll get a nick, the edge will go dull. So you’ll have to suffer through the process of sharpening it. And the whetstone is all those niggling little irritations and annoyances in your life.
Rough days happen. Stress is a given. Things can get ugly. But it’s up to us whether we choose to react—let our emotions dictate what comes next—or respond and take whatever measure of control we can over that moment in our lives.
When we’re trying to solve a problem, we fall back on our experience and our resources, on the things we’ve done before in similar situations, on our habits. And that’s a good way to go, most of the time. What worked before will often work again. But what if it doesn’t? How do you come at a problem from a whole new angle?
The TL:DR of this post is, “You see what you’re willing to look at.” Your perspective on life—good or bad—is your choice to make. And you can either be cynical or you can be hopeful. The one you choose is the filter you’ll have over every experience.
When you do what you do, who are you doing it for? And what will make you feel good about it? Do you need the comments, the likes, the subscribes? Do you need emails and reviews? Maybe it’s time to look at what you’re using to feel validated, and reconsider.
If you’re reading this, you probably came into existence a few minutes ago. Read carefully. This is vital training for how to proceed. Welcome to Thursday.

Book 13 in the Dan Kotler Archaeological Thrillers!
The Stack can't be hacked.
But Brate has done it anyway. And he's not alone—he's one of a klatch of hackers who have worked out ways to get around in the system, to get things people want. It's dangerous work. The Stack isn't just a network—it's culture, society, community. The Stack is life.
But there's something going on here. Something no one is supposed to know about. And now, Brate does.
He stumbles into the Guff—a repository of the memories of every human who has ever used the Stack. It's an infinite field of files, insight into every human on Earth. To have access to the Guff is to enter into God Mode—to be the ultimate power on the Stack.
None of this is supposed to exist. And what it means for humanity is something so frightening, it's literally wiped from the minds of everyone who learns about it.
Everyone except Brate. Because Brate is in God Mode.
Now he just has to keep the rest of humanity from going straight to hell.

My birthday was exactly 123 days ago. And that’s when I started writing this very special journal. Here’s what I learned from the experience.
